Troubleshooting

Rose-gold plating became matte after bath

Thin decorative rose-gold plating can react poorly to cleaning or previous surface condition and may lose gloss.

Symptoms

  • Rose colour becomes matte or uneven after bath
  • Gloss drops after cleaning
  • Local haze appears on plated surface

Likely causes

  • Coating was thin or porous
  • Bath chemistry, time or temperature was unsuitable
  • Previous polishing exposed a vulnerable layer

Checks

  • Check bath temperature, concentration and exposure time
  • Inspect whether matte zones align with worn plating
  • Ask whether the item was freshly plated

Recommended fixes

  • Stop chemical cleaning
  • Rinse and dry according to shop procedure
  • Assess whether replating is required

Prevention

  • Test cleaning on coated items
  • Avoid assuming decorative plating tolerates the same bath as bare metal
  • Keep bath parameters controlled

Warning for plated or coated surfaces

Coated surfaces may include electroplating, flash plating, PVD/CVD coatings, lacquers and other decorative or protective layers. Mechanical polishing may thin, remove, discolor, detach or otherwise damage such coatings. Do not polish coated surfaces unless the coating type, thickness and repair strategy are understood and tested.
