Sisal used too late or too aggressively

Surface becomes too rough or overcut when sisal is used as a late-stage or final polishing wheel.

Symptoms

  • Surface looks too rough before final polishing.
  • Details or edges appear overcut.
  • Final polishing cannot quickly restore a controlled surface.

Likely causes

  • Sisal was used after the surface no longer required aggressive cut-down.
  • Sisal was treated as a final polishing wheel.
  • Pressure, contact time or compound aggressiveness was too high.

Checks

  • Check whether deep scratches, scale or orange peel were actually present.
  • Inspect edges, relief and geometry before continuing.
  • Confirm whether the next cotton-wheel route can restore the surface.

Recommended fixes

  • Stop using sisal for this stage.
  • Return to a controlled cotton-wheel route.
  • Inspect and re-establish the surface before final polishing.

Prevention

  • Use sisal only as a cut-down preparation wheel before cotton-wheel polishing.
