Wheel is too soft for the defect

Scratches do not disappear when the selected wheel is too soft for the required cut-down or first-stage work.

What do material groups mean?
Mounted soft polishing wheel

Symptoms

  • Scratches or grinding marks do not disappear.
  • The wheel feels soft and follows the surface without cutting enough.

Likely causes

  • Wheel is too soft for the defect depth.
  • First-stage route is not aggressive enough.
  • Hard metal or deep marks need a firmer cut-down route.

Checks

  • Confirm material group and defect depth.
  • Check whether the surface was prepared to the expected abrasive stage.
  • Compare the selected wheel with the Wheel Logic article.

Recommended fixes

  • Use a firmer wheel or a more aggressive first-stage route.
  • For hard metals or deep marks, consider Sisal buff + LUXI Black before cotton-wheel polishing.
  • Inspect after cut-down before moving to final polishing.

Prevention

  • Select the wheel by defect depth, material hardness and process stage, not by compound alone.
