Troubleshooting

Aggressive ultrasonic cleaning damages the surface

A surface, coating or delicate detail changes because cleaning was used too aggressively.

Symptoms

  • Surface becomes duller or visually changed after cleaning.
  • A coating, patina or delicate surface appears disturbed.
  • Fine details look worse after a long ultrasonic cycle.

Likely causes

  • Cleaning time was too long.
  • Temperature was too high.
  • The item had a coating or unknown surface condition.
  • Cleaning was used to compensate for too much compound.

Checks

  • Confirm material, coating and previous surface treatment.
  • Check cleaning temperature, dilution and time.
  • Check whether compound overload caused the need for aggressive cleaning.

Recommended fixes

  • Reduce cleaning time and temperature.
  • Test coated or unknown surfaces before ultrasonic cleaning.
  • Clean the wheel and reduce compound amount instead of extending cleaning time.

Prevention

  • Use short controlled cleaning cycles.
  • Do not rely on cleaning to correct an overloaded polishing process.
  • Stop if the surface begins to change.
