Troubleshooting

Polymer smears during polishing

Smearing usually means the polymer has overheated or contact pressure/time is too high.

Symptoms

  • Surface drags, smears or becomes dirty and mobile.
  • Gloss does not build cleanly.

Likely causes

  • Overheating.
  • Too much pressure.
  • Contact time is too long.

Checks

  • Check speed, pressure and contact duration.
  • Check whether the material already softened during wet sanding or polishing.

Recommended fixes

  • Stop immediately.
  • Reduce speed, pressure and contact time.
  • Test on scrap and restart with short controlled contacts.

Prevention

  • Use low speed, wet sanding preparation and scrap testing.
  • Do not try to force gloss by pressure.
