Brown spots after polishing or plating

Brown spots or local discoloration appear after polishing, cleaning, plating or later production steps.

Localized brown discoloration in the recesses of a polished metal component.

Symptoms

  • Brown spots appear after cleaning, plating or storage.
  • The surface looked acceptable immediately after polishing but changed later.

Likely causes

  • Contamination remained before a later process.
  • The item was not inspected after cleaning.
  • Surface contamination, porosity or contamination from previous processing remained in pores or recesses.

Checks

  • Check whether discoloration follows recesses, pores or compound-retention zones.
  • Review cleaning time, temperature and chemistry.
  • Confirm whether the item was coated, plated or chemically treated after polishing.

Recommended fixes

  • Treat the issue as a contamination and surface-preparation diagnosis before repeating polishing.
  • Use a cleaner final route and controlled cleaning before the next coating-sensitive step.
  • Avoid aggressive cleaning if the surface is delicate or coated.

Prevention

  • Inspect after cleaning before plating, PVD, lacquer or decorative coating.
  • Keep compound amount minimal and wheel condition controlled.
