Cotton wrap polishing needs a low-temperature compound

Even at relatively high surface speed, soft cotton support and lower side pressure can create a gentler, cooler process.

A tapered small spindle with a hand-made cotton wrap positioned at a confined metal edge.

Symptoms

  • Cotton wrap or a hand-made cotton buff on a tapered spindle polishes gently but does not reach the expected shine.
  • A standard polishing paste does not seem to become active enough.

Likely causes

  • A 20 mm cotton wrap at 15000 rpm has relatively high surface speed, but the soft support and lower side pressure create a gentler, cooler process.

Checks

  • Check whether the contact is lateral and hand-controlled.
  • Check whether the cotton support deforms and reduces effective pressure.

Recommended fixes

  • Use LUXI Green and inspect frequently.
  • Use a small amount of compound and avoid forcing the cotton wrap with excessive pressure.

Prevention

  • Record cotton wrap diameter, rpm and contact style during process development.
