Titanium develops orange peel during polishing

Orange peel on titanium is often connected to overheating, continuous contact or uncontrolled surface-layer behaviour.

Fine orange-peel texture on a cool-gray titanium surface under raking inspection light.

Symptoms

  • The titanium surface becomes loose, uneven or orange-peel-like.
  • Long contact makes the surface worse rather than smoother.

Likely causes

  • Overheating.
  • Continuous contact with too much pressure.
  • Trying to compensate for insufficient preparation by polishing longer.

Checks

  • Check contact duration, pressure and wheel speed.
  • Check whether a low-temperature LUXI Green route or shorter passes are needed.

Recommended fixes

  • Use short controlled contacts.
  • Reduce pressure and inspect frequently.
  • Return to preparation if the surface is unstable.
  • Use delicate, low-speed polishing with LUXI Green and short, controlled contacts. Monitor temperature. Stop and reassess if the surface overheats or becomes unstable.

Prevention

  • Do not polish titanium with long continuous contact.
  • Select routes for heat control, not only cutting power.
