Troubleshooting

Increasing pressure does not improve the result

On large surfaces, extra hand pressure may increase heat without enough cutting efficiency.

A narrow rod and a broad plate positioned against matching polishing wheels to compare contact area.

Symptoms

  • The operator presses harder but scratches or dullness remain.
  • Heat increases while cutting efficiency does not improve.

Likely causes

  • Hand force is spread over a larger area.
  • Extra pressure increases heat but does not sufficiently increase local shear.
  • Compound/wheel route is not aggressive enough for the contact area.

Checks

  • Check contact area and wheel cleanliness.
  • Check whether the current first-stage compound is too fine.

Recommended fixes

  • Adjust compound/wheel aggressiveness and process control rather than only pressing harder.
  • Use short passes with inspection and manage heat.

Prevention

  • Estimate contact area before choosing the first-stage route.
  • Inspect after short passes and avoid indefinite pressure increase.
